Many have voiced concern over the fate of Monroe's Custer Statue, fearing its removal.
First, let me say that its fate does not rest on an online vote or petition. These petitions don't even have standing in Michigan.
A City Council vote would be required to remove the statue and it would not be destroyed, just re-located, but if a vote were taken, it would be strongly rejected by the Body.
Sadly, proponents were apparently unaware of the statue's history and what was being commemorated.
In 1910, when it was erected in Monroe, General Custer's wife, Elizabeth Bacon Custer, was still alive. This remarkable statue was a tribute to her husband's valiant during the Battle of Gettysburg during Sheridan's Shenandoah campaign.
For those who remain focused on the Little Big Horn, it may be surprising that Custer was probably the key figure in winning the Civil War. As our monuments and history are being erased, as was fore-shadowed in the book, "1984" by George Orwell, If you are curious as to why Custer--the "Boy General"--was hailed by many as THE KEY to winning the Civil War, I urge you to read about his role at the Battle of Gettysburg by clicking on the following link.

Here is an excerpt from the article:
"In the end, he was uniquely rewarded with the war’s most significant trophy. Union Gen. Phillip Sheridan purchased the table on which Gen. Ulysses S. Grant wrote the surrender terms for Lee to sign, and presented it to Custer with a note to Custer’s wife. It said: “Permit me to say, madam, that there is scarcely an individual in our service who has contributed more to bring about this desirable result than your gallant husband.”
